Cooking Over Fire

Sometimes it’s easy to get used to using a barbecue gas grill. Convenient and quick. No coals to dump after grilling. You just close the lid and wait until the next cookout.

Well, my grandson and I decided to go back to the basics this past weekend. I have a small outdoor wood burner and generally we are out back burning wood just for the fun of sitting around the fire. We decided to bring it up to the deck and make use of the grate.

We started a nice hot fire and got some serious coals going. Once the fire died down and there were plenty of coals, we put on some burgers. It was at a nice level so my grandson did the grilling. He is now 7 and has been grilling since he was 4.

I’ll tell you. The taste was wonderful and it was nice as we sat around the small grill and talked as we barbecued. In face, we enjoyed it so much we did the same thing the next day only this time we roasted hot dogs on a stick.

If you have a barbecue grill, make good use of it. But occasionally grill over some wood or charcoal and just change things up a bit. There is a different taste to the food and you get rid of some of the sticks in your yard. :-)

About Bob Blick

Although I currently have over a dozen websites online, I started up realmencooking.com to share my passion and knowledge for barbecuing. I want this to be a fun and informative site and plan to write basically the way I talk.
